This heirloom variety is awesome and I've been growing it for, let's see....18 years. Wow. I just realized I'm getting old. Anyway. What makes it great? Starting with the root, we will dismiss the notion of baby beets with this one. Or smooth round beets at all, for that matter. These guys get massive. About 6-8" across, and a bit lumpy. The inside is deep red marbled with a bit of white and the sweetest most tender delicious flavor. Easy preparation. Peel the whole thing, cube it and saute or roast. Renowned for its long storage capabilities and extreme sweetness, these can go in the fridge or root cellar for 6 months unharmed. Another great feature is the plentiful juicy mild greens! The long stems are great for bunching for market. Plant them early, they need 80 days.
